Our Mural

Work in progress 2002

New in 2005
We operated our bindery in our basement at home for many years before moving to a rented facility on Osborne Street. After 3 years there, we purchased this building early in 2002 and have renovated it from its earlier status as a tavern to its present, and permanent, function as our shop.

Our Mural inside the entrance of our shop is a full-wall mural painted from a 1929 photograph of downtown Auburn, NY. Jim is holding the original (below left). It was painted in 2002 by Anthony "Tony" Clubine of Cicero NY, who also painted the big East Hill mural on Genesee Street in Auburn.

Tony & Jim made many trips to the library, historian's office and museum to find the photo that would be used to paint the mural. They sought a street scene of downtown Auburn, and ultimately found this lovely old black-and-white photo dated 1929.

The scene is easily recognizable as Genesee Street looking east, since many of the old buildings are still here today. Tony kept all the signage accurate, so that the stores in the mural are the same as in 1929. Before the invention of the mall, going shopping in the downtown section was a major social event. The vehicles and pedestrians are accurately depicted, showing the volume of traffic and commerce in Auburn's downtown area in 1929.

The mural is the topic of many lively and enlightening conversations. Almost everyone who stops by has a new anecdote, and we're always learning from our customers when they stop to chat about our mural. Whether you live in the Auburn area, or are just passing through, we'd love for you to stop by and see for yourself... this magnificent work of art that tells such a detailed story of a segment of our area's history.
